Ironworkers USA Federal Credit Union’s Teri Robinson Receives Top Regional Honor

For transforming the credit union, Robinson wins the 2018 Innovation and Impact Award

TACOMA, Wash.  — Teri Robinson, CEO of Portland, Oregon -based Ironworkers USA Federal Credit Union, has been honored by her industry colleagues for not only restoring her credit union’s financial strength but for taking its charter nation-wide, opening membership to Ironworkers all over the country. Robinson won the Innovation and Impact award at the Northwest Credit Union Association’s (NWCUA) annual MAXX Convention.

When Robinson took the reins as CEO of the former Pacific Northwest Ironworkers Federal Credit Union in 2009, the recession was peaking in Oregon, and many of the credit union’s members were unemployed. Regulators were concerned about the credit union’s low” net worth ratio,” which determines a credit union’s financial health. On Robinson’s watch, the credit union was transformed. An overhaul of the credit union’s lending program provided more opportunities for members to safely borrow. The success at Ironworkers USA FCU has been stunning; assets have doubled, and its financial health far exceeds federal regulators’ standards for “well capitalized” credit unions. In addition, the member-first mantra at the credit union has improved the lives of thousands of members.

“Under Teri’s leadership, her team has helped thousands of members avoid predatory lenders, improve their credit scores, increase personal savings, and qualify for home loans,” said Jennifer Wagner, NWCUA’s Chief Advocacy Officer.

In mid-2018, the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) approved Robinson’s plan to create a national charter for Ironworkers USA FCU, meaning in the next several years, membership will be available to over 90,000 Ironworkers in every state.

“I am humbled to be honored by the NWCUA and represent CUs in the northwest” shared Robinson.  “When I started this journey I quickly learned that Ironworkers are not only hard workers but ferociously loyal to their brotherhood. Their commitment to each other’s well-being is what started our credit union and has inspired our commitment to them and fueled our continued growth. Our mottos were “we might be little but we are strong” and “together we stronger. ”  Like most credit unions, we truly care about–and are completely committed to–our members’ financial health. I’m incredibly grateful for the collaboration between our loyal members, supportive board and our talented team that has helped us get to the point where we can expand our reach to help Ironworkers across the country.”
