FAKE TOLL PAYMENTS
Scammers are actively targeting individuals with fake text messages about missed toll payments. These messages claim you must pay a small fee to avoid fines and include links to fraudulent websites that steal your debit or credit card information. If you receive a toll notice via text, do not click any links; instead, contact your local toll authority directly to verify the claim.
IRS SCAM
In a similar scheme, the IRS has reported a surge in tax-related scams, especially through phishing emails and “smishing,” SMS phishing via text messages. These messages may claim you’re owed a refund or that there’s an issue with your tax return, urging you to click a link or provide personal information. Clicking can load a virus onto your device or result in identity theft. Remember: the IRS will not contact you via text or email about tax payments or refunds. Always visit IRS.gov to access accurate, secure information.
Remember:
- Never click on links in texts or emails from anyone you don’t know.
- Don’t share personal or financial information unless you’re sure of the source.
- Report suspicious messages to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or your local authorities.
