Budget- and Waist-Friendly Meal Planning to Recover from the Holidays

After the costly and sometimes indulgent holidays, when budgets and belts feel particularly tight, you can shop smart, cook affordably, and keep food costs manageable with a few practical tips and recipes:

•  Create a weekly meal plan to cut down on buying snacks or expensive takeout. There are many helpful meal-planning apps, like Paprika or MealBoard, that can help you get started, build weekly shopping lists, and offer recipes.

•  Plan for leftovers, like doubling a recipe and using the extra for lunches, to help reduce food waste and costs. Look for easy casserole recipes, soups built from inexpensive beans and vegetables, pasta dishes, and slow-cooker meals made from more affordable bulk ingredients to keep post-holiday spending in check.

•  Reduce the stress of prep by taking a little extra time to chop vegetables, portion out your meats, or freeze produce ahead of time to save you time and energy after a long day’s work.

•  Buy low-cost staples, like grains, pasta, and nuts, in bulk to save more. Store-brand versions of pantry staples offer the same quality, but at a much lower price, saving up to 30-40% compared to name brands.

•  Look for seasonal produce as it’s cheaper and fresher, and don’t be afraid to try “ugly” or imperfect produce that may be discounted to reduce waste and lower your grocery bill.

•  Keep your refrigerator and pantry organized to see what you already have, avoid buying duplicates, and use ingredients before they go bad. Shop on a full stomach to reduce impulse buying and swap pricey ingredients for more affordable ones.

•  Grow your own produce or check with community gardens for fresh produce.
