Give Every Dollar A Job

Use Zero-Based Budgeting to Take Control

When your hours and income can change, knowing where your money needs to go is especially important. Zero-based budgeting helps you decide before you spend it.

Start with the money you expect to bring home. If your paycheck varies, build your budget around a lower or typical check instead of counting on overtime. Cover the essentials first, including housing, utilities, food, transportation, and other necessary bills.

Next, assign every remaining dollar a purpose. Money can go toward savings, paying down debt, upcoming expenses, or everyday spending. When your income minus your planned expenses and savings equals zero, every dollar has a job, and nothing is left unplanned.

That doesn’t mean spending everything in your account. Saving is a job too. Money set aside for an emergency fund, future purchase, or slow period is still part of the plan.

When overtime or extra income comes in, decide what it needs to do before it disappears. Use it to build savings, get ahead on debt, prepare for a large expense, or leave room for something you enjoy.

Your budget can change when your income or priorities change. Review it regularly and move money where it is needed most. The goal is not perfection. It is to stay in control, make intentional choices, and put your hard-earned money to work for you.
